Filmed in 1984, the culmination of 10+ years of oldschool radness uprocks its way onto the soundstage, but the crossfader may have slid just a few beats early.  Maybe if Graffiti Rock would have come out two years later with License to Ill as a gateway, network television may have been ready to pick this up. Our loss, but at least someone was smart enough to distribute this dvd. Run DMC (Rev. Run pre-bubblebath tweets), Shannon, Kool Moe Dee, Special K, and The New York City Breakerss (without which we may never have had Jabawockeez),  Vincent Gallo, and Debi Mazar, are all on set.

And though everyone seems to be fascinated with early 90’s retro fashion these days, this video oracle to showcase examples of 2010’s super-broad horizontal striped polos, giant square-framed vanity glasses, fitted white pants, and ripped stockings along with the ubiquitous American Apparel leggings, skinny jeans, Sperry topsiders and high-waisted girl’s denim of the last few years. Fresh.

So as the Grill ‘Em All truck continues to slay L.A. with Altru’s Cam on board, we are happy to announce that the Altru Destroy t-shirt seems to have become an unofficial crew member. On any given night, you will catch at least one of the ground beef warriors waging battle adorned in Altru’s cotton-spun armor. Last week’s debut was a sizzling success. The “Waste Em All” burger was the beards-and-flannels favorite, while the “Molly Hatchet” and “Blue Cheer” cross-bowed the foodies’ hearts. And the “Dee Schneider” Peanut Butter and Jelly Maple Bacon Burger is a truly underrated gemstone; sweet and savory at the same time for those who like to eat desert with their dinner. Finally, a foodie truck for people who actually take eating seriously. While other hipster Restaurant Vehicles have delighted us with fusion cuisine and pretty desserts, it is rare to find one cooking up grub that true roach coach aficionados could enjoy: good ol’ American burgers. Inspired variations, such as the “Molly Hatchet” (seared fennel smoked sausage gravy, apple wood smoked bacon, maple drizzle) and the “Blue Cheer” (cranberry gastrique, maytag blue spread, munchos potato chips) will keep the bloggers’ thumbs busy touchtyping on their iPhones. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be scarfing down the sweet meats with a handful of tater tots and 24oz beverage. Veggie versions available if you are so inclined.

Just as Lars took on the big boys at Napster, the GrillEmAll doods and their cherished Chariot have thrown down the gauntlet; calling out all the fancy sit-down-climate-controlled gourmet L.A. burger joints which have been popping up like Wack-A-Moles. Cam Amick defiantly takes a day out of his intense Altru shipping schedule to moonlight on the Grill Em All meat crew December 19th (1640 N. Spring Street at the Family Industries opening party 8pm til’ you turn into a werewolf).

This weekend, The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis opened at the Hammer in Los Angeles. Over a period of 4 years, Crumb painstakingly translated the book of Genesis into a complete series of black-and-white comix style panels. Now I look forward to reading these stories! On display, in order, are the hand-drawn panels featuring smudges, grid-lines, page numberings, and other signs of a much toiled-over process. For those of you who don’t know, Crumb spent his childhood and adolescence in a self-imposed comic book boot camp with his brother before becoming the much sought after Keep On Truckin’ and Fritz the Cat artist in the 1970’s. I’m glad that decades of dedication to his craft are paying off in this most recent surge of popularity. I Believe

While wheeling and dealing at the various fashion happenings this week, sometimes it is important remember that Vegas is the epicenter of high production low common denominator live entertainment. Underlying intellectual subtext and the existence of irony are missing in many of these productions. And that’s OK! If you know what you are getting into, you can enjoy the ride (even if it is only as camp). A joint venture between Criss Angel and Cirque du Soleil, “Believe” is a great way to get a chopsuey sampling of the two shows. After a comedic Cirque du Soleil prelude, a rockstar entrance by Criss,  and a Dane Cook type audience banter segment, the show really gets rolling. Our favorite Mindfreak proposes marriage to his long time assistant just before his camera girl (who is some sort of demon in disguise) sabotages a high voltage trick and electrocutes him into a surreal purgatory. Bram Stoker’s Dracula-esque modern dancers and Donny Darko human-size magic bunnies make things difficult for the frayed jeaned hero. Criss levitates a few times, pulls off a few Whodini switcheroos, and gets chainsawed into bloody meatchunks on his way to saving the girl and living happily ever after. Goodtimes.

This is the main dining room picture taken from one of the second floor balconies. There is also a separate second floor dining room as well as a more ballroom style third floor. Waterfalls, bears, caribou, and a real working mini-chapel (complete with Justice cross and creepy Altru employee waving) round out the decor. The gigantic serving area, complete with jello salads and country-fried cuts of meat, can be seen through the hallway in the middle of this shot. If you’re lucky you’ll catch the pimp (in the lower left hand corner in this shot) who will sometimes rock electrically lit ensembles.

Crewest Gallery Belmont Tunnel Show

Dead message boards and various search engines yielded much information and by coincidence, downtown L.A.’s Graffiti-centric gallery, Crewest, was hosting the “Legendary Belmont Tunnel” art show. I didn’t put two and two together but at this moment I realized that this Belmont Tunnel subway yard (Toluca Yard) was the same Belmont Yard cited in almost every L.A. graffiti documentary.

Whether you are interested in the artwork specifically or are the guy who watches the ‘cities of the underground’ cable t.v. show (or both), you will be fascinated by the collection of historical photographs and new artwork.  All the new pieces are painted on duplicate canvases featuring the print of a fictional Belmont brand aerosol can. The show runs until the 28th of June. Check it out, while I figure out a way to sneak into the luxury apartment complex that now sits on the lot to the catch a glimpse of the now cleaned up and reworked tunnel cover and terminal building.
