At Dim Mak Studios Saturday…
Adorned in the best Crystal Castles meets early nineties industrial trimmings ever, Street Drum Corps, provided an aggressive trigger-all-samples-by-pounding dystopia worthy of the hype.
With enough sidechain compression to satisfy your Ed Banger/Dim Mak cravings along with kinetic italo-disco basslines, angular 80′s posturing, funky falsettos, and vocoder goodness, Das Tapes were solid openers and great robot friends.
Historic downtown Hollywood provided the perfect backdrop as M83 stopped by Friday night to provide soundscapes for Kimberly Bruckbauer’s Project Urban Renewal. Here the stylist curates pieces discovered by her favorite etsy buyers from all over North America and teleports the virtual lookbook to true IRL status.
Seventies Chicago rockers destroyed disco records and baseball fields in 1979′s prolific declaration of war on all things Saturday Night Fever. This day lives in infamy on Altru Apparel’s own Disco Sucks tee..

Pop art protege, Banksy creation, or street art’s Newman/Kramer? Whatever side you take on the popular controversy, fact is Brainwash’s next show (Artshow 2011) crowd-sources pieces by LA artists looking for a place to exhibit their work. Here are some behind the scenes photos of the installation process. Front-and-Center on the south wall is a mega-print of the Steigman Blown Away Guy photo which we are proud to hold the license to, so if you want this most famous print on your chest instead of a wall in L.A., order here!

Elizabeth Sankey (1/2 of Summercamp) took time out of her busy SXSW schedule to answer these provocative queries posed by Altru’s very own Vanessa:
Describe your dream sandwich.
I was actually thinking about this today. I’ve never tried one, but I
dream about the best meatball sub, with cheese and amazing soft fresh
bread. Drool. I also love good burgers. We go to this place
meateasy in London – they have the best cheeseburgers ever.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A really really good mum who somehow manages to avoid the inevitable
“urgh you’re so annoying” stage when my kids are teenagers. I realise
that’s impossible but it’s nice to dream.
What was your favorite band when you were 13?
Blur. Always and forever.
Name your favorite character on 90210 ( old ).
When I was a kid I loved Brenda Walsh, mainly because she had that
tempestuous relationship with Dylan and everything always seemed So
Important And Serious. But she kind of disappeared out the show
because she was an off-screen pain in the butt. I recently started
watching the show again, and Tori Spelling’s character is amazing -
she just sits above all the action being ridiculous and knowingly
kooky.
Beatles or Rolling Stones?
Beatles. I don’t believe anyone who says they don’t love the Beatles.
Or rather I do believe it, I just don’t want to.
Pepsi or Coke?
Pepsi. It always tastes fresher and more ‘homemade’ to me. Which I
know is ridiculous as it’s pure chemicals.
Best place in London to enjoy a pint?
I’m Teetotal but I love pubs. There’s one near my house called St.
John’s which does great food, and there are loads of good haunts in
Camden and Kentish Town near where I live.
Best record shop in London?
Rough Trade! My friend Sybilla works there and she’s a total babe.
She makes great croissants and sometimes puts hearts on top of
people’s coffee. Oh and they also have a fantastic collection to buy.
Are you an East End girl or a West End boy?
Both, I grew up in South West London, but then moved to South East
when I was 18. Now I live North East. There’s a definite divide, but
I like to think I’m doing my part to represent both ideological
structures.
What are your plans for this year?
We’re playing Glasto and with Pulp in Hyde Park and got the album
coming out. Next year we want to come to America for a while, we love
it so much every time we go.
Thirty years of New York and L.A. fashion and music culture mashed into itself one Saturday afternoon at the multi-level retail/concert/art/lifestyle space known as Freakcity. Walking down Hollywood Blvd., I noticed the Downtown 81 (must see for all Jean Michel Basquiat enthusiasts) poster in the deco window. The real surprise came when a woman with a French accent approached me and introduced herself as the producer of the film. It was Maripol, New York icon, who was pretty much involved with everything that came out of the prolific eighties East Village scene (including the Gaga-esque crucifix jewelery and black rubber bracelets she styled Madonna in). And with a Marc Jacobs collection plus a new photography book, she continues to scene-shape. The lazy sunny day in Hollywood further flirted with the space-time continuum as nineties hip hop producer/guru/tastemaker, Rick Ross, and L.A. punk legend Exene pulled up folding chairs on the black marble sidewalk known as the “The Walk of Fame”.

Found this gem at Amoeba Records. Produced and hosted by legendary street scene anthropologist, Michael Holman, Graffiti Rock is the pilot episode of a hip-hop American Bandstand type dance show. The video cues up hip-hop’s historical tipping point from urban neighborhood and NY art/hipster phenomena to full blown pop cultural force.
Filmed in 1984, the culmination of 10+ years of oldschool radness uprocks its way onto the soundstage, but the crossfader may have slid just a few beats early. Maybe if Graffiti Rock would have come out two years later with License to Ill as a gateway, network television may have been ready to pick this up. Our loss, but at least someone was smart enough to distribute this dvd. Run DMC (Rev. Run pre-bubblebath tweets), Shannon, Kool Moe Dee, Special K, and The New York City Breakerss (without which we may never have had Jabawockeez), Vincent Gallo, and Debi Mazar, are all on set.
And though everyone seems to be fascinated with early 90′s retro fashion these days, this video oracle to showcase examples of 2010′s super-broad horizontal striped polos, giant square-framed vanity glasses, fitted white pants, and ripped stockings along with the ubiquitous American Apparel leggings, skinny jeans, Sperry topsiders and high-waisted girl’s denim of the last few years. Inspired variations, such as the “Molly Hatchet” (seared fennel smoked sausage gravy, apple wood smoked bacon, maple drizzle) and the “Blue Cheer” (cranberry gastrique, maytag blue spread, munchos potato chips) will keep the bloggers’ thumbs busy touchtyping on their iPhones. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be scarfing down the sweet meats with a handful of tater tots and 24oz beverage. Veggie versions available if you are so inclined.
Just as Lars took on the big boys at Napster, the GrillEmAll doods and their cherished Chariot have thrown down the gauntlet; calling out all the fancy sit-down-climate-controlled gourmet L.A. burger joints which have been popping up like Wack-A-Moles. Cam Amick defiantly takes a day out of his intense Altru shipping schedule to moonlight on the Grill Em All meat crew December 19th (1640 N. Spring Street at the Family Industries opening party 8pm til’ you turn into a werewolf).
It’s Burgertime.
Hopefully you enjoyed Altru’s appearance on the Wayne’s World meets Trendspotting-for-the-PBR-and-Bacon-crowd broadcast by the IATT guys last night. Now that our blog is working again, I am giving these dudes from the city of Da Bears and Vienna a proper mention. Especially because they are the ones who came up with this gem of internet-tainment (featuring Hanna Beth from the Altru Apparel website):
The guys at I Am the Trend will feature Altru in thier live broadcast tonight at www.iatt.tv
8PM Central time so that’s 9pm East Coast and 6PM West Coast.
Get there!
Lots of new blogs coming. Just waiting on an update to our server. Thanks! In the meantime, check out all new Altru designs for men and women!
Engelbert Humperdinck’s #1 crooning actually kept The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever from reaching the top of the UK charts. Here he is in Altru’s Howl.

Halloween: the most appropriate time to see Michael Jackson’s “This is It”. Not only a last look at Michael Jackson, the film reveals the nuts-and-bolts behind the fog machines and pyrotechnics. We’ve seen a million crotch grabs and MJ videos looping in the television section at Frye’s, but this piece shows the method behind the gloved one’s showmanship. The spotlight is on Michael’s mastery of craft (for example, dissecting the moments in between the sounds into complex rhythms and movement beats) and competency in directing the huge production (down to the psychological nuances of cuing lighting effects in the background set pieces). The only complaint is that since they were in rehearsals (where he saves his voice), we never get to see MJ belt out any of the hits but are treated to a recorded voice track over Billie Jean, Beat it, and Thriller run-throughs.
I leave you with the best video ever: 1984′s “Torture”. Michael didn’t show up to the filming but was present in the form of a wax replica and a close-up on a sparkley gloved hand catching a whip. His vocals, which appear on the second verse, are pretty awesome though.
Skeet Skeet strikes again! This time in Altru’s “Ginsberg Howl” (snapped by Cobrasnake)!
Though it is still being filmed, we at Altru are happy to know that our “Organ” t-shirt will be appearing in Christina Aguilera’s upcoming movie, “Burlesque”. All that Pussycat Doll training will be put to the test.

This weekend, The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis opened at the Hammer in Los Angeles. Over a period of 4 years, Crumb painstakingly translated the book of Genesis into a complete series of black-and-white comix style panels. Now I look forward to reading these stories! On display, in order, are the hand-drawn panels featuring smudges, grid-lines, page numberings, and other signs of a much toiled-over process. For those of you who don’t know, Crumb spent his childhood and adolescence in a self-imposed comic book boot camp with his brother before becoming the much sought after Keep On Truckin’ and Fritz the Cat artist in the 1970′s. I’m glad that decades of dedication to his craft are paying off in this most recent surge of popularity. Check out the Crumb Vans shoes a few posts down and of course all the Crumb shirts on our Altru website.

In the early 2000′s the Faint laid the foundation for the entire dance-punk, fashion-rock, indie-tronic, etc, etc, scene which followed into the mid 2000′s. Here’s Todd Fink, lead singer of the Faint and button presser for Depressed Buttons beatmatching in our Ginsberg Howl shirt.
Google Image Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and staring you in the face you’ll find an old snapshot of him wearing an Altru Apparel Arm and Hammer t-shirt. Needless to say, Altru shirts will be making an appearance in the upcoming David Fincher film featuring Justin Timberlake and zombie assassin Jesse Eisenberg.

While wheeling and dealing at the various fashion happenings this week, sometimes it is important remember that Vegas is the epicenter of high production low common denominator live entertainment. Underlying intellectual subtext and the existence of irony are missing in many of these productions. And that’s OK! If you know what you are getting into, you can enjoy the ride (even if it is only as camp). A joint venture between Criss Angel and Cirque du Soleil, “Believe” is a great way to get a chopsuey sampling of the two shows. After a comedic Cirque du Soleil prelude, a rockstar entrance by Criss, and a Dane Cook type audience banter segment, the show really gets rolling. Our favorite Mindfreak proposes marriage to his long time assistant just before his camera girl (who is some sort of demon in disguise) sabotages a high voltage trick and electrocutes him into a surreal purgatory. Bram Stoker’s Dracula-esque modern dancers and Donny Darko human-size magic bunnies make things difficult for the frayed jeaned hero. Criss levitates a few times, pulls off a few Whodini switcheroos, and gets chainsawed into bloody meatchunks on his way to saving the girl and living happily ever after. Goodtimes.
While we prepare the next product photoshoot, here are some in between styles that we have in stock. Email jmsn@altruapparel.com if you want to get any of these in the mail right away.

I can’t believe how great this is. The expiration date is from October 2006 (of course we all drank it anyway) and there is no information to be found on what may be one of the best packaged energy drinks of all time. The Energy Gorilla Safari Blueberry. It even shows the back of the Gorilla on the back of the can and says “Kicks Butt”. Typewriter shirt available now, email if interested.
